Chapter 8

ANNA - Present

Brad left early for work this morning. He said he had a meeting to attend and wanted to get there before it started to go over his presentation. I never told him about Michelle or what I had done at work. How can she look the same, speak the same and have the same name but not be the same person? But it is better to keep him in the dark until I can prove it was her and discover what happened after they moved. Without absolute proof, he would still say it’s a coincidence.

I don’t want to confront Michelle again, as she has already denied things. I’m going to have to work this one out myself. Then I can face them all together. Once I know the truth, they cannot keep lying to me. I start to wonder if Brad is involved in their deceit. What if Brad knows the truth and isn’t telling me? My paranoia is worsening as my thoughts are all over the place. I don’t know who is being truthful with me.

“Come on, Harry. You will be late,” I called upstairs.

“Ok, Mum.”

Harry was dragging his heels this morning, which was irritating me a little. I wanted to get over to her address as soon as I could.

“What took you so long?” I ask as he walks into the kitchen.

“I’m tired.”

“Well, if you didn’t play games so late and got some sleep, you wouldn’t be.” My irritation sounded in my voice.

“Ok, don’t start. I’m here now.” He snaps back at me.

I hand him his lunch box. “Here, put your lunch in your rucksack.”

I’m already standing with the door open as he struggles with his lunch. “Come on then. I have things to do today.”

“Chill, what’s the rush.” There is no sense of urgency in anything he does.

I bite my tongue, trying not to take my frustration out on him. It’s not easy when I’m wound up like a coiled spring waiting to be released.

He never refuses a lift. We drive to his school in silence. I usually enjoy taking him on the days I’m not working.

“Have a good day.”

“Will do,” he says as he slams the car door shut.

My hands begin to sweat as I enter Michelle’s address into the Satnav. As it searches, my heart rate increases. It seemed like a lifetime before it located the address, five miles away. I hit Drive on the Satnav and take a deep breath as I pull away.

Following the instructions, turn left, then right. The monotone voice leads me down various streets. My thoughts turn to what I will do when I get there. I’m sure Michelle will be at work, but what about Rob? What if he is at the house? My hands grip the steering wheel tighter, and my neck and back tighten. Should I confront him, ask him what the hell happened?

The next street is her street. I pull the car over to the kerb and stop. My knuckles are white from gripping so forcefully.
